Plant Care Guidelines

Adaptation:
Herbaceous peonies: Zones 3 through 7.

Tree peonies: Zones 3 through 9. To determine your zone, see the map in Plant Climate Zone Map.

Flowering Time:
Spring.

Light:
Full sun, or half-day sun in hot, dry areas.

Planting Method:
Plant peonies in the fall, placing the eyes of the tubers 2 inches below the soil surface.

Soil:
Well drained, high in organic matter. pH 6.0 to 7.5.

Fertilizer:
When planting, mix a half cup of superphosphate 0-20-0 into the soil for each plant. During the growing season, fertilize with a balanced plant food according to label directions.

Water:
How much: Apply enough water to wet the soil 1½ to 2 feet deep.

How often: Water when the soil 1 inch below the surface is just barely moist.

Handling:
Divide herbaceous peony clumps every 6 to 10 years. When cutting flowers, leave 3 or 4 leaves on the stems. To ensure an ample bloom the next year, pick only a third of the blooms for cut flowers.
